Complete QR Code Guide

Everything about QR codes from principles to creation, design, and practical applications.

What is a QR Code

QR (Quick Response) codes were developed in 1994 by Japan's Denso Wave for tracking automotive parts. While traditional barcodes can only store information horizontally, QR codes store data in both horizontal and vertical directions, allowing much more data capacity. QR codes can store up to 7,089 numeric characters or 4,296 alphanumeric characters, with error correction capabilities that allow reading even if partially damaged. This feature makes it possible to embed logos while maintaining scannability.

QR Code Types and Applications

URL QR: Links to websites, landing pages, or specific product pages. Most commonly used for marketing campaigns, business cards, and product packaging. WiFi QR: Stores WiFi network name (SSID), password, and encryption type for instant connection by scanning. Perfect for cafes, hotels, and offices. vCard QR: Stores name, phone number, email, and company information that auto-saves to contacts when scanned. Great as digital business cards. Email QR: Pre-sets recipient, subject, and body to open the email app when scanned. Useful for customer feedback collection. SMS QR: Sets phone number and message content to open the messaging app when scanned. Used for event participation or reservation confirmations.

Effective QR Code Design

Size: Print at least 2×2cm. The farther the scanning distance (posters, etc.), the larger it needs to be. Generally, the minimum size should be 1/10 of the scanning distance. Contrast: QR codes are recognized by the contrast between dark modules and light backgrounds. The foreground color must be sufficiently darker than the background. Black-white is most reliable, but high-contrast combinations like navy-sky blue also work. Margin: A minimum quiet zone of 4 module widths is required around the QR code. Insufficient margins increase scan failure rates. Logo Insertion: Embedding a logo in the center increases brand recognition. However, ensure the logo doesn't exceed 30% of the total area, or scanning may fail. BotCarry Tools' QR generator uses error correction level H (30%) for stable scanning even with logos.

Business Use Cases

Retail/Food Service: Insert QR codes on menus to link to digital menus. No need to replace printed menus when items change. Education: Add QR codes to textbooks and learning materials linking to supplementary videos, reference websites, and interactive content. Events: Insert QR codes on tickets and invitations for quick check-in. Link to event information pages that can be updated in real-time. Real Estate: Add QR codes to property signs linking to detailed listings, virtual tours, and contact information.
